Tom of FinlandA film is in the works about the life and work of Tom of Finland, a Finnish artist who peaked in the 1950s and 1960s with erotic images of gay men. As the Los Angeles Times reported on September 9, Finland’s Helsinki-filmi production company announced at the Toronto International Film Festival that an authorized movie is in the works.

The company also announced that Finnish director Dome Karukoski will head the project. The artist, who was born Touko Laaksonen, is most know for his illustrations of muscled gay men in various stages of undress. His art challenged censorship laws as the images he produced stimulated the visual senses of eroticism and sexuality. His work was celebrated because of its groundbreaking presentation of homosexuality into the expository world of art.

Tom of Finland art has made its way into New York’s Museum of Modern Art and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and his illustrations are published in several books. Now fans and admirers of his work will get a glimpse into his life and what inspired his artistic views. Helsini-filmi is proud to be able to produce this biopic.

Aleksi Bardy, producer and partner at Helsinki-filmi, said in a statement:

“We’re very pleased to be able to bring the first biopic to Tom of Finland to the screen. It’s impossible to overstate the impact Tom’s work has had on the image and self-image of gay men all over the world. He created the archetypes that now form an integral part of the iconography of popular culture, both gay and straight.”

The company is also inspired to bring Tom’s life and artistic value to screen in such a way that fans of his work will really get to know the influential emotions of his life.

About - Tarringo T. Vaughan always believed he had a love affair with literature. One of the first pictures he saw of himself was of him at maybe the age of three or four year’s old sitting with a book in his hand. But for Tarringo, growing up in the depths of the inner city both in Boston, MA and Springfield, MA made him believe that expression through the literary voice was un-cool and unattainable. As a very quiet and shy child he learned it became very valuable in his self expression. Born in 1976, Tarringo was the first child, grandchild and nephew in a family that had grown accustomed to struggle. His mother was a teenager who quickly lost the support of my father who today he knows very little of. These aspects of his life triggered the inspiration of his pen.
