"Locke" - Screening - Red Carpet Arrivals: 57th BFI London Film FestivalTom Hardy has beat out Justin Timberlake in landing the role of gay pop icon Elton John in the upcoming biopic “Rocketman” according to a report by E! Online on October 23.

The casting does come as a surprise, but the 36-year-old British actor known for his role as Bane in “The Dark Knight Rides” is up for the challenge and at least has Elton John’s accent down packed.

The film, directed by Michael Gracey, has been in the works for sometime by Elton John and his partner David Furnish and will tell the story of music icon’s life as a young prodigy and his journey in becoming an Oscar-and Grammy-winning musician.

In a press release, producer Steve Hamilton Shaw praises Hardy’s acting skills.

“Tom is a stellar talent who will add extraordinary depth and nuance in bringing Elton’s story to life. We are excited to have such a gifted actor on board.”

Hardy’s versatility as an actor has also been praised and played a factor into the decision to cast him in the role. According to Focus Features CEO Peter Schlessel, Hardy “has proven his ability to transform himself completely into the character or subject found in the material.”

As for Elton John himself, he is planning on re-recording some of his iconic songs for the movie that is set to begin production next fall.
