Issues on gay rights and equality has taken center stage in the United States island territory of Puerto RicoThe Associate Press reports on Tuesday that Puerto Rico’s government is supporting an effort to overturn a ban on gay adoption.

It was just February that the Puerto Rico Supreme Court voted in a 5-4 ruling to uphold a current law which bans adoptions by same-sex parents.  According to Puerto Rico’s constitution, it “does not prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation’ and accepted arguments presented by the legislature that the ‘traditional family’, composed of a father, a mother, and their children best protected the well-being of minor”.

But the “traditional family” has changed and anytime a child has the opportunity to be placed in a loving home, discrimination based on the sexual orientation of those willing to provide that home and care should be reconsidered.  This was the argument brought up by a lesbian woman who sought to legally adopt her partner’s daughter.  READ More at
