Actress Maria Bello has a girlfriend. As US Weekly reports on December 1, the 46-year-old actress known for her role in “Prisoners” as well as other major films like “Coyote Ugly” and “Grown Ups” came out as gay by revealing the long-term relationship with her best female friend.
The revelation was made in a column written by Bello in the New York Times on November 29. In the passage titled “Coming Out as a Modern Family,” the actress shared her coming out experience and the impact it had on her 12-year-old son Jackson, who she admits was suspicious of his mother’s love life because she made her confession.
“This was the moment I had been anticipating and reading for months,” said Bello. “I took a deep breath, knowing that my answer, and his response, would have an impact on our lives for a very long time.”
She explained to him that she was with someone very special and someone that was her best friend. She decided to give the relationship a try after she came to a realization while reading old journals. She continued in her passage:
“I read about the handful of men and the one woman I had been in romantic relationships with, passages rife with pain and angst. It seemed when I was physically attracted to someone, I would put them in the box of being my ‘soul mate’ and then be crushed when things didn’t turn out as I had hoped.”
She said the picture she came across of her and her best friend taken on New Year’s Eve revealed happiness between the two, one that showed her that they could perhaps pursue something romantically.
Maria Bello admits that revealing the news to her parents and the rest of her family was awkward, but they did agree that Bello’s girlfriend is a “good girl” for her.
The relationship comes after Bello’s previous relationship with TV executive Dan McDermott. Maria Bello joins a long list of celebrities who have come out as gay or bisexual in the last couple of years.
