Just days after hip-hop star Iggy Azalea pulled out of her performance at this weekends (June 13-14) Pittsburgh Gay Pride event, pop star Nick Jonas has been announced as her replacement. The “Jealous” singer will be the headline performer at the street concert. The 22-year-old is a less controversial choice as he has a gay following and has no link to prior anti-gay remarks unlike Azalea.
The event’s choice of the Australian rapper quickly drew criticism and backlash from advocacy groups for her previous use of anti-gay and racist remarks on social media. The advocacy groups felt Azalea’s inclusion in the even goes against the values of acceptance that is intended to be promoted.
Iggy Azalea did apologize for her past remarks and has regrets in her choice of words. She made it clear that she is a firm believer in equality thus cancelling her performance. Jonas currently plays a gay boxer on the TV series “Kingdom” and has been very supportive of the LGBT community. DJ Digital Dave, DJ Strobe, Thea Trix, Chance Encounters and Steel Pan Pittsburgh are also scheduled to perform at the event.
