MARCANTHONYSAMUELNumber1-colorHomosexuality on soaps has only been explored recently in the history of daytime television. Characters like Bianca Montgomery of “All My Children” and the front burner storyline romance between Will Horton and Sonny Kiriakis on “Days of Our Lives” has transcended the gay character on soaps into major story lines. Back in December, “General Hospital” introduced its own gay character played by soap newcomer Marc Anthony Samuel who talks about the character, stereotypes and the possibility of a gay romance for the character of Felix DuBois in a July 16 interview with Gay Star News.

Although the character of Felix isn’t the first gay character to be introduced on GH, he is the first to have gained attention. Felix, who plays a gay student nurse, was introduced as a sassy, effeminate African-American who first appeared pulling out a tube of “red velvet lipstick” to help fellow nursing student Sabrina. GH head writer Ron Carlivati, who is also gay, took heat for the introduction of Felix because many in the gay community felt it was a stereotypical portrayal.

Carlivati responded to controversy and to anyone who was offended by the character.

“As far as I’m concerned, to be offended by this character is what is offensive, ” said Carlivati in response to an online blog. “The only people who seem to have a problem with him are certain gay men who are apparently afraid of a gay character who might be portrayed as a little bit effeminate.”

What Carlivati wanted to show was that gay comes in many forms and the longer Felix has been on the show, the more depth the character is starting to get. Samuel is enjoying the role and tells Gay Star News that it’s “been a privilege to work with people” who he has watched for years. He calls the experience “surreal” and so far finds the opportunity to play the character of Felix a “great ride.”

Over time fans have come to embrace the Felix and Samuel sees the possibility of a real romance for his character.

“People have really taken a liking to him an I’m glad, I’m really glad because GH fans are serious. I’m so glad to have them on my side. I’ll take them in a bar fight with me, I’ll have them so back-up when I’m doing a big dance number. They’re faithful and I love them.”

As far as a love interest goes, Samuel believes Felix will find somebody to call his own.

“I don’t know anything yet but that’s what it sounds like will happen. I think overall that’s what they’d like to see. Felix can’t be going after straight guys all the time. He knows better.”

About - Tarringo T. Vaughan always believed he had a love affair with literature. One of the first pictures he saw of himself was of him at maybe the age of three or four year’s old sitting with a book in his hand. But for Tarringo, growing up in the depths of the inner city both in Boston, MA and Springfield, MA made him believe that expression through the literary voice was un-cool and unattainable. As a very quiet and shy child he learned it became very valuable in his self expression. Born in 1976, Tarringo was the first child, grandchild and nephew in a family that had grown accustomed to struggle. His mother was a teenager who quickly lost the support of my father who today he knows very little of. These aspects of his life triggered the inspiration of his pen.
